Tripod mount centered under the sensor?

After looking at my Nikon DSLR and my Nikon mirrorless camera, it looks like the tripod mount is directly under the center of the sensor. That can't be a coincidence, especially as this is quite far back on the D7100 so not ideal for balance.

Is this placement helpful for shooting panoramas or something like that?

I guess the axis of rotation of the tripod head would then also be directly below the tripod attachment screw.

Checking my Panasonic and Compact cameras: with those it's more like the middle of the camera, while the lens is left of that.

Two Nikon film bodies and a Petri: much further forward than under the film plane, but centered with regard to the lens.
