E-M5 III exif data: no Focal Length In 35mm Format field

Photo app on macOS doesn’t show focal length information of pictures shot with my Olympus E-M5 Mark III. By contrast, it shows that information for pictures from my Panasonic FZ-82.

I analysed exif data from both cameras, and the difference is Olympus does not include the field “Focal Length In 35mm Format”, while Panasonic does.

I include a snipped of exif data on focal length from both cameras:

  • Panasonic FZ-82 file:

% exiftool P1040185.jpeg|grep ocal

Focal Length : 8.6 mm

Focal Length In 35mm Format : 48 mm

Focal Length : 8.6 mm (35 mm equivalent: 48.0 mm)

Hyperfocal Distance : 3.62 m

  • Olympus E-M5 Mark III file:

% exiftool M5300028.jpg|grep ocal

Focal Length : 18.0 mm

Focal Plane Diagonal : 21.6 mm

Max Aperture At Min Focal : 4.0

Max Aperture At Max Focal : 5.6

Min Focal Length : 14

Max Focal Length : 150

Focal Length : 18.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 36.1 mm)

Hyperfocal Distance : 3.04 m

Olympus has more fields, but not the one mentioned, which is field that Photo app considers in order to provide focal length information.
