For those of you who have some experience with this combo, is this pair fast enough for street action? Thanks in advance!
I've been shooting with an X100V for over a year now, going out almost every weekend. Generally speaking, when I've used AF to try to focus on someone while I am walking and that person is walking towards me, the focus can be quite hit or miss. Even with my micro four thirds cameras which, in my experience, are faster at S-AF focusing, focus isn't guaranteed. On top of that, I also lose time because I have to put the AF point on the subject before focusing and shooting.
I've found that zone focusing works best for me in boosting the percentage of shots that are in good-enough focus. And because I often shoot while myself and/or the subject are moving, I also try to shoot at f/8 and 1/500s whenever possible. This frequently means the ISO climbs quite high but when shooting in daylight, the Fuji raw files are pliable enough to keep shadow details. If noise gets out of hand, I'll run the file through DxO's DeepPrime noise reduction tool.
At that point, the only thing I need from the camera is for it to turn on very quickly.
In low light, zone focusing doesn't work as well and I have to change my technique to adapt. That's when I stop to shoot and user slower shutter speeds and wider apertures. In those situations, I've found AF speed to be fine because I'm not trying to capture scenes within a literal second or two after spotting them.
I guess that's my long winded way of saying that, in good light, AF speed doesn't have to be a concern. In my experience, zone focusing is both faster and more reliable.
