I don't have a huge armoury of lenses to compare it with, but it's clearly superior at 17mm to the Canon EF-S10-18mm for contrast and resolution, as well as being two stops faster. It also manages to beat my full-frame EF 24-85 for sharpness at the APS-C borders at 24/3.5, 4 or 5.6. At 50mm, my EF 50/1.8i beats it both because it really gives 50mm (this lens looks nearer to 45 at the long end) and because it's sharper!
It gives about 1/3 less exposure than my Canon lenses when set to the same aperture.
Glad to hear you found a lens that you are so happy with. Do you have the A16 or B005 version? The former came out in 2006 and the latter in 2009. I have the older version and am still very happy with it.

The Sony a7C II refreshes the compact full-frame with a 33MP sensor, the addition of a front control dial, a dedicated 'AI' processor, 10-bit 4K/60p video and more. It's a definite improvement, but it helps if you value its compact form.
