The 300 and 400 are small enough to hand hold - as long as you can select a fast enough shutter speed, given the lack of IS.

It's one of those situations that once you're use to IS, it's hard to not have IS. Really I don't think anyone should consider a tele lens without IS.

But I do think if you know you're going to be on a tripod (a sturdy one), these mirror lenses would be cool to try out. There cheap and offer long range focal length compared to it's counterparts.
