Personally, I don't enjoy long lenses with (my) kids. I feel kids are best shown within their environment, interacting with things or people or the photographer. They don't have "interesting" faces yet that stand on their own in a portrait. To show the environment a bit, some stopping down helps, too.

As such, I generally prefer a wider focal length for kids. Something that allows you to interact with them, something personal. Even 35 mm is often too tight for me. Something around 18 mm works best for me.

Clearly this is a matter of preference. So don't take this as criticism. (And beware, the kid will be much more mobile pretty soon!)
