What is your current microphone?

The 416 is an excellent short shotgun mic, but for this application you'd be fine with a cheaper mic like a Rode NTG3, or better yet, a long shotgun mic like a Rode NTG8.

Audio-Technica makes some very good, relatively affordable shotgun microphones, but some of them aren't very sensitive, so you'll need to do your research to find one that's sensitive enough for the noise floor of your preamp.

In this regard I would recommend the AT875r. It's a very sensitive microphone and only needs 24v phantom power.
