These are the photos from todays comp. I got the R7 as 15fps really helps. But I think the M50 is great. I will be keeping it. I think the F1.8 at 100mm Shallow DOF may be contributing to some soft faces but I am not sure. Lots of soft face as this speed in the darkness. Tracking helps but loses her in the turns alot. Not sure what to do there.
Skating comp photos Super Dark Rink
I am thinking rent a R5.
The R5 is an exceptional camera. Very capable shooting about anything. I trust it completely.
The R7 does have stickier (Human) Eye AF though, and more AF customizability. I wish they'd give this to the R5 in a firmware update!
R2
I am thinking he would want her whole body in focus and in the lower light high ISO will be required
Unfortunately he's already pretty close to max (acceptable) ISO with his R7. Deeper DOF would help things, but IMHO a faster shutter speed would be the more pressing need (re: Comp photos @ 1/500 second).
and the R5 or R6 would be better.
Certainly, but above what the OP wanted to spend initially.
Why rent a R6 though.
Sorry, I missed your earlier point. I was thinking that YOU'D want to rent an R5, not that the OP should rent one. An R6 would indeed be an option too, as the skating shots wouldn't necessarily need the benefits that the R5 provides (over the R6).
R2
More MPs for cropping I guess.
I have run high ISO R5 raw files through PL5 and oh my !
What lens would you suggest for his low light photos to go on the R5 ?
For high ISO the RP could get better shots than a R7 with the right lens ?
That is why I keep my RP. Brings home the low light shots.
FYI I tried 1/640 and 1/800 in the days leading up to and I didn’t see much improvement in detail but way more noise at the same level ISO to wear Deep Prime didn’t help much
I think the rink is just too dark. The other rinks will be better lit and I am hoping to use faster shutter and less ISO although DXO did great with these on her skin
I think the main problem now is DOF but if these is more light I will try f2.8 and see how that goes.
Yes f/2.8. The R7 will need more light for sure though.
You better rent a R5 with a RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L for when she wins ?
If I was doing paid work I would for sure just buy an R5 but for my family photos I am very happy with what I can get from my M series and the R7.
All her award photos and group photos I took with the M50 and 11-22 with a flash.
The other skating rinks have better light than this one. I will try my Sigma 50-150 f2.8 and the 50-100 F1.8 at the 2.8 setting in the other rinks over the season with both the M50 and R7.
Any didn’t mean to derail anyone by mentioning the R7, I just appreciate the help I got here and wanted to show the final work. The tips and discussions here have applied to both of these cameras perfectly. DXO is part of my Lightroom work flow now.
Thank you
