The Rode website claims it provides a list of cameras providing plug in power, but I cannot find it. Instead, on their page (https://rode.com/en/microphones/on-camera/videomicro) for Rode VideoMicro (which needs plug in power) it says:

The VideoMicro is extremely user-friendly as there's no switches or battery to worry about - just plug in and go. All microphones need power however, and in the case of the VideoMicro it is drawing a very small voltage commonly referred to as "plug-in power" from your camera (or recording device) via the audio cable.

Plug-in power has long been a standard for camera manufacturers, and so the VideoMicro is compatible with the vast majority of cameras in the market.

The following cameras unfortunately do not support the VideoMicro:

  • Nikon D7000
  • Canon T3/1100D
  • Canon C100, C300, C500
  • Canon VIXIA HFR500
  • Canon VIXIA HFG20, HFG30
  • Canon XA-10
  • Canon Vixia G10
  • Canon Legria HF G25

If you are experiencing issues getting your VideoMicro to operate with a camera not listed above, firstly be sure to update your camera's firmware to the latest version (available from your camera manufacturer's website). If you are still experiencing issues please get in touch with us via our support page.

There is no similar liust for the Rode VideoMic GO, but o#its quickstart guide includes the following suggesting that somne cameras need you to turn on the plug in power in camera menus:

Setting up your camera for use with the VideoMic GO™
The VideoMic GO™ does not require batteries for operation, but instead uses the plugin power supplied via your camera’s microphone input.
For best results with the VideoMic GO™, set your camera’s audio input to the following settings where possible.
Audio input: Microphone input.
Audio Level/Gain control: Manual (when available)
Plugin Power : ON
Warning! Do not supply phantom power to the VideoMic GO™. Phantom power is the 24 or 48 volt powering option supplied through professional XLR microphone inputs on some cameras. The VideoMic GO™ requires Plugin power, which is typically supplied by default through your camera’s 3.5mm microphone input socket at around 2 – 3 Volts.
Refer to the user manual supplied with your camera for instructions on adjusting audio settings
