The Smallrig 3457’s Arca clamp rotates through 360 degrees so that you can adjust it to work with L-plates or cages that have Arca plate rails perpendicular to the lens axis. This is separate from the 360 degree pan of the entire head. Your solution for he VA-5 does sound reasonable for your setup, though, and as you point out, may lead to some ability to balance.
