Hi Dunlin,

The third and especially the last photo are super shots.

Thanks.

With the coot was that the only photo you took????

No. I took around a dozen, about 10 of which I kept.

You'll find wildlife shots are hard to nail focus wise, you're moving the ducks moving, you've camera shake as well. Don't trust your focusing system either, thats why I've almost 70,000 photos using my 7D mkII that has a great focusing system. I need sharp pictures and the only way I can guarantee sharp is to take more photos, there will be one that you'll look at that makes you smile.

Well, I'm experimenting with AF. I think the main problem is the camera was repeatedly focusing on the bird's body, rather than it's eyes.

I was using the centre AF point, with 4 assist points, with Servo AF. It's not too easy to keep a swimming bird's head aligned with 1 AF point at 300mm on a lens without IS.

I think I need a combination of practice, a L-series (sharper) lens with IS, and perhaps eventually the 7D mk2.

And by the way I think the 7D's shutter is good for about 150,000 actuations so don't panic yet.

I'm around 55K, so I've still got a way to go. Anyhow, the camera is still under warranty for another 22 months, so either way I don't need to worry.
