Re: Calibrating external mic with DSLR

Andrew asked an important question that I would be helpful if we knew the answer:

Are you recording audio from the Zoom recorder on to the SD card, then importing the audio off the SD card and syncing in post?

Or are you trying to record from the zoom via a cable directly in to the camera?

The zoom has a headphone out (which I believe is LINE level) while most cameras only accept a MIC level input.

Andrew linked to an in-line attenuator which will drop line levels to mic levels if you are trying to record from the zoom recorder directly in to the mic input on the camera.

But I think you are better off using the zoom to record directly to the card, import it in to your editing software, then sync the audio. Oh, after you have synced the audio, you then mute the audio tracks that were captured by the camera.

Even though you will be using the audio from the zoom recorder, you want to get the best audio you can from the camera TOO just in case there is some problem with the audio on the zoom recorder (like if there are parts that are too loud and the audio clips or someone accidentally touches or bumps the zoom recorder or the battery dies halfway through recording).
