How do you set the focus area for whole frame when using face tracking mode? Isn’t that the non-optional default?

Yes, this seems to be a conflict as you need to be in tracking mode (with the face icon).

I would suggest looking at Jan Wegener's RF AF setup (https://youtu.be/-nnRqgXu7QI?t=462). Jan is a bird shooter, but by changing the tracking to Vehicle (or None), it works great for airplanes.  I still have the tracking starting point be the AF square (as Jan suggests). Still, I have augmented this with dual back button focusing (as Jan recommends) and find that the "eye detection" when it vehicle/none helps when the lens can't pick up any airplane (but it tends to randomly jump around, so I only use it if focusing doesn't lock on anything).  Per my other post to you today, also be aware of the Case mode for tracking.

I'm only "pushing" the tracking mode so much because I found it works vastly better with flying aircraft. Previously I had used the expanded focus spot mode (big square and 8 little surrounding squares. It was next to impossible to keep planes framed well with them going in different directions. Made even worse by trying to keep the shutter speed to 1/125th or below for prop blur.

With Vehicle (or None tracking), AF worked over 99% of the time (in over 20,000 photos) to the point that I could concentrate on framing (zoom and positioning in the frame) and panning technique.
