How did you use the rail system?
do you set it up on tripod, set camera up. Focus point on the spider head. Then rail in camera micro movement then snap shot , keep repeating. Not moving focus point?

thanks trying to learn this process

Hi Rick,

Yes, basically what you wrote is what I did here.

Settings for the camera that I use:

  • Manual focus
  • Interval shooting - this tells the camera to wait 5 seconds after the shutter is pressed, then it takes a shot, then waits 5 seconds, etc. I set it to repeat this for 20 shots. In Olympus cameras, this is the place where you can choose whether you want the shots to be combined into a time-lapse video.

To start, I move the camera using the rail until the focus is just short of the closest part of the subject.

Then, click the shutter, which runs the 5 second wait/shutter/5 second wait/shutter sequence. Right after the shutter click, turn the knob on the rail so it's a little closer to the subject. Then the shutter timer ends and shoots, you turn the knob, shutter timer ends, turn, etc...

You could also use a remote shutter phone app or whatever you have, and click when you're ready, which would avoid using the timer and give you as much time as you want between shots to adjust the rail.
