I own a 70-300mm zoom with macro facility, it is a cheap lens. The problem is that over 200mm the quality drops off quickly. These days that can be offset by AI sharpness programs, Topaz Gigapixel is mentioned on this forum or there is an AI section in Photoshop that includes a sharpness mode. The macro mode is surprisingly good.

What wildlife do you want to photograph? The 70-300mm will be fine for a horse at 50m but hopeless for a crow-sized bird at 20m. Look at Scott's suggestions (above) for longer alternatives.
