Calibrating external mic with DSLR

HI, this is my first post in this video forum.

I am currently with my grandparents (yearly visit) and I have my d500 with me. A time ago I bought the Zoom h1n. I wanted to use this with my d500 to make video of my grandparents. I thought the Zoom will be better then the camera microphone. I tried this but the sound is very bad...I understand that I need to adjust the Zoom audio level to the camera level (or the other way) but I don't know how.

Also there is a gain knob that I must adjust? Please can someone help me out with the calibration and settings..

I want to make video inside the house.

Thank for the comments.
