I own a Canon R and the 7D MkII which will soon be replaced with the new R7

Hi Chris'

Pssst. I just wanted to give a heads up that I just posted a thread (over in the R Forum) with samples from a waterskiing show that I just shot with the R7. Long story short, it ROCKED!

Hello, R2D2.

Hey back at you Lumenite!

Would you compare R7 with M6mk2

I haven’t really shot the R7 enough yet to draw any major conclusions, and I always hate to form opinions based on first impressions. Too many times do things reverse course after shooting for a while.

in terms of AF

So far I’d say that Eye Detect (Subject Tracking) of humans is inhumanly good. It’s the main strength of this camera. The M6ii’s Eye AF is primitive in comparison.

I still think the M6ii’s Spot AF can conquer about anything that’s thrown at it, although I suspect that (without awesome Eye AF) that it might have struggled with the water spray (waterski shoot).

I haven’t shot enough birds yet to form any opinion. Some folks on the forum are struggling.

image quality

Very close. I haven’t done any A / B comparisons, but they both will deliver.

EVF with EVF-DC2, etc?

The R7 definitely has a better EVF, but they’re both still a fair notch down from the R5. The thing that makes the R7’s EVF/display work better than the M6ii’s IMHO is that the R7 has eShutter bursts, which makes viewing and tracking much smoother and easier (shooting bursts).

Overall, the M6ii’s (much) smaller size can still be a deciding factor, because the R7 is definitely a handful. And the one thing I really wish the R7 had was a third wheel. I miss it while shooting, and I miss it during playback.
