It still looks like the focus is off on the first picture

Motion blur may be a contributing issue, but it still looks to me like the biggest issue is with the focus being off (too close). Look a the hairs, you have the closest white hair that is sharp and not blurred at all, and the hairs get progressively blurrier as they are further away.

I've been sorting through thousands of shots of propeller airplanes taken with the RF100-500 at slow shutter speeds, typically 1/60th to 1/125 while panning (to get prop blur and show motion). I have seen a LOT of motion blur in all kinds of detail.
