Brett I have followed your suggestion and instructions of 45 degree diagonal shift direction for the stitch - thanks for taking the time. And all well and fine here if tilted diagonal focus is not involved,

Here an example with the attempted diagonal focus plane in upper left diagonal position, marked with a paper with "ok". The first diagonal shifted shots is fine::

But here is the problem: when rotating the shift axis 180 degrees for the opposing 3 shots the diagonal tilted focus plane gets mirrored. And it is not possible to get the diagonal focus plane with the tilt in the upper left position.

detail of focus:

The 6 (or 5) shots are not suited for a panorama stitch. They may stitch if the contrast between focused and out of focus areas is not too strong, but the result will be a digital blend of mixed focus planes.

Will you please type out your steps so I can follow what you are doing? My initial reaction is you rotate the shift mechanism 45 degrees for the first three shifted photo and then you would rotate shift mechanism 90 degrees not 180 degrees to do the opposing diagonal shifts but you can’t actually rotate the shift rotation mechanism 180 degrees

Let me ask, are you able to do what you are trying to do if you do a horizontal shift and instead of diagonal tilts just do up/down right/left tilts?
