Brett I have followed your suggestion and instructions of 45 degree diagonal shift direction for the stitch - thanks for taking the time. And all well and fine here if tilted diagonal focus is not involved,

Here an example with the attempted diagonal focus plane in upper left diagonal position, marked with a paper with "ok". The first diagonal shifted shots is fine::

But here is the problem: when rotating the shift axis 180 degrees for the opposing 3 shots the diagonal tilted focus plane gets mirrored. And it is not possible to get the diagonal focus plane with the tilt in the upper left position.

The 6 (or 5) shots are not suited for a panorama stitch. They may stitch if the contrast between focused and out of focus areas is not too strong, but the result will be a digital blend of mixed focus planes.
