I'd think I could get as high or higher a hit rate with manual spot on an R5 as I could get with subject tracking

and I think I could keep up with an M6II

BIF might be different

BIF is the acid test. Or dragonfly in flight. Chances are, you can't. In any case, the M6II tracking easily beats me. For me, hitting a dragonfly with the center spot would be a rare event, but the full-frame tracking had little problem with it. Not all attempts got focus spot on, but I did manage to score several good hits in a few minutes.

Subject Tracking does not keep objects that are moving around the frame sharp, only in focus.

Any lateral movement across the frame can still cause subject motion blur, and must be compensated for by either tracking the subject yourself with the camera, or by using a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the subject at time of exposure.

thanks for explaining this - in other words, since you aren't manually panning as much those jumpin focus points in auto tracking need even higher shutter speeds

I don't think he's discussing tracking.  I think he's referring to shutter speed.
