Thanks. These images often take a couple of days of refinement to make and at two weeks, sometimes longer slogging it out in Photoshop to fine tune them to where I'm more or less happy. They're never really done.

why wouldn't you use a dedicated stacking program, i found photoshop practically useless for stacking extreme macro subjects.

I DID. I used Helicon AND I used Zerene Stacker. They both choked. I ended up doing seven sub stacks in Helicon Focus of around thirty or so images each and then tried again to use Helicon to stack those sub stacks together and it was a complete clusterf... er... mess. I did NOT use the focus stacking function in Ps, which is idiotic and does not work. What I did do was bring those seven sub stacked images into Ps as layers, select all layers and then run the Align Layers tool, which actually does work quite well, and then manually blend them altogether with Layer Masks, and even after all that, which worked remarkably well, there were weird anomalies where the grain structure of the machining marks were oddly misaligned from the original stacking in Helicon and simply had to be manually and physically retouched to make them work.

And when I first found that odd machining grain misalignment in the first stacking operation and since I keep the setup set up until I'm more or less done with the project, which in this case was a couple of weeks, I went back and re-shot just the portion where the grain lines were weird, thinking that maybe I was beyond the limits of the resizing capabilities of Helicon (check the prefs) and this would address it. I was wrong. Same misaligned grain lines where in a section of the metal, those grain lines would make a dog leg turn that simply wasn't there on the tool.

Just sayin'...

I was wondering how the metal grain was so good. I haven't had zerene stop even processing 16 80 meg hi res stacks. I will have to give a pair of pliers ago to see how my system works
