That is a fine picture of a beefly and oechids, but for my taste it all could be(e) a bit more bright.
I may have been a little conservative in my exposure, I will maybe upload an edited version in the macro forum on this site... Hm, just checked if I had uploaded the wrong version of the image - no I haven't but the dpreview gallery version of the image is about 1 stop darker than the image is when opening in xnview from my harddisk...
They are pretty rare and I have not seen one for ages. I might have one on film taken many years ago. This has been a really bad year for insects. Almost no hover flies or Ladybirds in my garden. Quite a few honey bees now, almost no Bumble bees.
The first half of the year was excellent for insects. I have numerous shots of those bee flies on orchids and common columbine (very hard to get the colors right in print, I am currently waiting for my large print behind acrylic glass but the flower was largely out of gamut when soft proofing) and the highlight besides those flies was a large occurrence of green-underside blues that too were gathering for the evening (and subsequent morning) on common columbine flowers, that color combination is simply stunning. The second half started very well with large numbers of the large chequered skipper (not as good as a few years back when instead of single figures on a 10km hike you had 5-10 on a single wayside bird vetch flower but good numbers neverthless)... Then came the drought which is the second worse in recorded history where I live. I expect the autumn to be good for dragonflies though if we get some timely rain...
