Sure, it's absolutely doable, I don't question that. I used a 50mm on aps-c for many years as my only portrait lens, so I know it's well possible.

My point is that if I want to take an environmental portrait I prefer a wider focal length because of the less compressed look it gives. And if I want an isolated outdoor portrait, 135mm gives me higher compression, that I prefer in such case.
