A Study - Eggs from the White Salt Marsh Moth
7

While doing some macro photography out in the field (literally) the other day, I found a blade of grass that had some tiny blueish-purple eggs on them. Metallic as well. Since it was in the middle of a baseball field, I figured I could pick them since the field would be mowed in a few days...and took them inside to do some extreme macro shots using my Olympus setup.

First, the eggs on the blade of grass near a United States Nickel for size comparison. Each egg was about 0.6 millimeters in width.

First, I took a shot of the bottom three eggs that lined the edge of the blade of grass. I did this using my Olympus EM1 Mark 2 tethered to my computer to use OM Capture. This way I could get my focus where I wanted it before I began the focus bracketing.

-EM1 Mark 2

-MC-20 Teleconverter

-Kenko 16mm extension tube

-Olympus 60mm macro lens

-Raynox 250

Focus bracket mode was set at 1/10. ISO was 200. I use the GODOX 126 LED on my hotshoe and put everything in a "drawer" I have lined with white paper on the sides and top so that I can use it as a type of Light box if you will that captures all the light I can and spreads out the light evenly. I also use a cheap flex diffuser to help with keeping hot spots away from my images.

This was the result of 180 images stacked with that setup...stacked in Helicon, Method C. This is approximately 5.5x magnification - and a field of view of about 2.5mm (I did do a small crop of about 20% to get things where I wanted it for the final image).

Next, I had my hated, dreaded and much maligned Raynox 505 with me. Folks hate the thing usually, but I have found it to work VERY well with my MC-20/Olympus 60mm setup as it allows me to use the sharpest part of the lens in the very center....I do have to crop some, but it's worth it for the detail I get with my sand images which I am sure many of you have seen.

-EM1 Mark 2

-MC-20 Teleconverter

-Kenko 16mm extension tube

-Olympus 60mm macro lens

-Raynox 505

This was the result of 275 images stacked with that setup...stacked in Helicon, Method C. This is approximately 8x magnification as I backed off the 60mm just a tad from 1:1 setting- and a field of view of about 1.5mm (I did do a small crop of about 30% to get things where I wanted it for the final image).

Now, I didn't have my Raynox 202 with me that day, so I brought it with me and worked over lunch to do two more stacks using the Raynox 202. I was happiest with the 202's results....

-EM1 Mark 2

-MC-20 Teleconverter

-Kenko 16mm extension tube

-Olympus 60mm macro lens

-Raynox 202

This was the result of 265 images stacked with that setup...stacked in Helicon, Method C. This is approximately 7.5x magnification as I backed off the 60mm just a tad from 1:1 setting- and a field of view of just under 2mm (I did do a small crop of about 20% to get things where I wanted it for the final image).

This one had a slightly larger crop, but the same settings at 7.5x

Would love any and all thoughts....
