Histogram question

I am sometimes struggling whith  correcting white balance especially in very warm pictures such as taken in late hours with very warm colours. I mostly try to draw the histogram to the left so that I have the white near the left border. But in these cases with very warm colours this makes no sense as the picture gets wrong colours. I have been told that that the picture should always have a "white dot" and the histogram should hit the left border. My question is do you abandon this rule in very warm scenes such as sunsets where there simply are no white dots?
