Why not use both?

i used to be under this false understanding and then realized when you put another piece of glass in front of your good quality lens, it changes the IQ of your lens - even if it by a small amount. canon or other manufacturers (as far as i know) have never suggested this idea for lens protection. glass may protect the lens from the sand blast if you go to the beach on a windy day, as far as i can think of, but that would be it, IMHO.

but on the other hand, if your lens is about to hit a wall or something like that, the lens hood can takes the brunt of the impact much better than a glass in front of your lens, in my experience.

good luck.
