Collapsible primes?

Inspired by some of the newer zooms that collapse for storage/transport, I wonder if a similar strategy could be used to create some prime lenses that squash down – without losing too much in the way of image quality. Good idea? Terrible idea? Simply impossible? I seem to recall a few very early pop-out primes from the fully-manual film days.

Edit: this would not be worth doing for pure novelty, but in the spirit of OMDS's refreshed branding that puts the emphasis on go-anywhere small size, low weight, and terrific results. So I would not advocate throwing things like weather-sealing to achieve this.
