Extension tubes are rubbish

I found this, pic 1 (sooc jpg), and initially thought why was a bird dropping on the inside of the kitchen window

Trying to get closer into the eye as it looked interesting (so did the scales) I threw on a 36mm and then a further 20mm (=56) extension tube (to an efs-60 macro on apsc) pic 2 (sooc jpg)

I dont think either combo of tubes had any effect , other than to make things blurry. I'm disappointed. Obviously i dont yet understand whats going on so will have to try some tests tomorrow.

I expected to get closer but dont actually think i did, not enough to notice

Despite moving from f8 without tubes to f16 with the tubes i think dof has actually reduced

I expected eye detail, but its a mess (several shots are all bad)

Any pointers  on the use of tubes ? (I'm not sure i want to get a raynox or a Laowa yet)

BTW, apparently this might be Eudryas grata, known by its common name the beautiful wood nymph - hah

regards

Jim
