A6400 wheel question

I've always been a landscape/aperture priority guy. Decided to expand into some wildlife shooting after buying Tamron 150-500. I found when switching to shutter mode(which I've never used) the wheel doesn't change aperture only bring up exp. compensation. No matter what I tried it repeats that mode. In manual it moves the aperture. Am I missing something ? It's more than annoying because I find it's changing exposure compensation without me realizing it.
