hi,
Does anyone have both?, do you use them interchangeably or select one for specific tasks ?
I have the s60 but and my biggest issue is probably lighting / diffusion, so I'm intrigued by the capabilities of the m28 with its inbuilt lights.
I assume its IS and much smaller size comes in handy too
I looked at the samples provided in the EF-M 28mm macro - Post your PHOTOS! thread but few talk about the experience of using the lens, many are using it as general purpose travel lens whereas I'm more interested in its macro capabilities. Its also a rather quiet thread which suggests its not an overly used lens (or perhaps your using the macro forum instead)
So from a macro point how useful are the lights ?, do you use this with or without flash for best results ? do the find the IS useful for handheld macro ?
A couple of recent examples of what I'm taking at the moment with the s60, would the m28 just be similar or offer improvements ?
Wonderful photos indeed! Great lighting.
I'd say that the previous posters have summed things up quite well! The 28 is a fun (tiny) lens that I enjoy for quick-grab macros (I like it primarily for flower close-ups and still-lifes). And is a useful lens for walk-around if the focal length suits you.
As mentioned, the very close MFD can be difficult for critters, and the lack of background blur can make compositions quite challenging. The LEDs are a bit limited due to the low power and positioning. If you can apply the lighting you used in your posted examples you'll do much better.
If you want to take advantage of the M6ii's Focus Bracketing feature, then some high powered LED lights are highly recommended. The Aputure Amaran lights (from B&H) are the best I've found...
Shown with the EF 100L Macro, which has a tripod foot for mounting the lights.
Adjustable for brightness and color
Lighting is key!
It certainly is R2... and since i'm using a flashgun you can add diffusion to that too. Diffusion is tricky.
Prior to the flash (a recent fathers day treat) I'd been doing stacking with a lower powered led ring light or even natural light, so lots of long exposures on a tripod, post processing stacking, and results that appear by magic (rather like film) .
Flash gives the freedom to move around and try different things and get quicker results. I'm obviously a convert... any more and I'd sound like an evangelist. That said, stacking and constant lighting giving greater DoF sounds right up my street
