Will using the electronic shutter extend the life of an older digital camera?

How old?

For cameras made after, oh, 2010 or so, which includes all of the X series, mechanical shutter wear-out has stopped being an issue. The old-time shutters probably wouldn't last a month under the 15-20 fps loads that many modern action photographers apply.

One does occasionally hear of a young shutter breaking after maybe 20K to 75K actuations, but you'll discard the camera as being hopelessly obsolete long before today's mechanical shutters will wear out.
