Is "the trinity" still holy in 2022?
1

The camera world has changed so much in the last decade or so I'm wondering if it's worth questioning some of the ongoing orthodoxy.

I think anyone still posting on DPR in 2022 knows what the holy trinity of lenses is but if not it's basically a trio of "fast" constant aperture zooms covering everything from the ultra wide to moderate telephoto. 10 years ago a bag of first party 2.8 zooms meant you had the best of the best zoom wise and could capture anything. Before the Sigma ART line came out, optically optimized primes were pretty rare, so I don't think it's unfair to say an F/2.8 zoom probably outperformed a lot of older primes at a given focal length. So a 2.8 zoom was kind of the kind of the hill.

Fast forward to now and primes are consistently great IQ wise; zooms in general are much better as well, all the way down to the consumer level.... sensor IQ is so much better it does a lot of heavy lifting with IQ, particularly if the MP count is high or the high ISO capabilities are strong.... and a high IQ system is a lot lighter than it used to be, which IMO calls into question the value of lugging around 2-3x zoom glass weighing in over 2lbs.

Obviously there's still a huge market for them and I think through tradition manufacturers showcase their capabilities through them. Every now and then I see comments expressing full on disgust for variable aperture zooms without much explanation why.

But to me F/2.8 is kind of in a no-man's land aperture wise.... F/2.8 primes are pretty niche because people generally want more speed for all the tradeoffs primes come with. The tradeoffs of an F/2.8 zoom vs an F/4 or variable aperture zoom are often significant too. What do you think? Is the F/2.8 zoom still the aspirational product it was a decade ago?
