Beautiful. And sad.

I once visited Vatnajökull on Iceland. It's the largest inland glacier in Europe. I saw it "calf" as we call it, into the Atlantic. I.e. saw large blocks detach and float away as icebergs. It happened so silently. I had thought there would be a big bang when it happened. I think of it sometimes and wonder how it looks today, 45 years later. If the ice border is much farther up on land, if the whole ice mass is lower. When I saw it the glacier ended very abruptly, a high vertical wall of ice towards the sea. I patted it. I was too much of a coward to even think of walking on it.
