V-mount battery electrical questions

Some v-mount batteries are sold with camera kits to power canon or sony cameras. The battery is 14.8V and the cameras uses 7.4V, so there must be a voltage converter somewhere. Any idea how efficient the converter is, typically?

For example, if the camera draws 7.4V 1A, a 90% efficient converter would draw 0.56A 14.8V from the battery. A cheap converter would draw 1A 14.8V and waste 7.4W of power as heat.

And when the battery is not in use, is there a switch to turn off the converter circuit? Because even when no camera is attached, the converter circuit would consume small amount of power, and if there is no switch to turn off the converter, the battery would slowly run down.
