Relation of video resolution to sensor's natural resolution

I am curious to know how the two relates.

For example, the GH6 has a (5776 x 3248) pixel in 16:9 format. If I am taking UHD video at 3840 x 2160, how does the camera handle it?

I believe, because of the physics of the lens, the image would occupany the entire width of the sensor (as evidenced by no crop lost in 4K video). That means, for every pixel in the video, it took up 1-1/2 pixel in the sensor.

Does that mean that the camera's software down sample the (5776 x 3248) ubti 3840 x 2160? How does it handle the half pixels? Do they get discarded?
