80-400 or 100-400

before we start, i know what Thom would say "you can spend £2700now or £1000 now and £2700 later down the line"

let me explain:

Next  year I have a trip to Botswana, Malawi and Namibia planned. The trip will last a few months and some of that time is set aside for various trips to animal hides, photo safaris, and some other opportunities. I want to keep my kit fairly compact but at the same time have a lens or two that will keep me going through the photographic opportunities of a lifetime. Some of the photography trips involve facilities and vehicles with gimble heads attached, but some do not. Therefore I shall need to be able to handhold my telephoto lenses.

So I am thinking the 80-400 or 100-400. The thing is I have a Z7ii and a D810. Obviously the latter lens wont work on the D810, but that body could be holding my 70-200 or 24-120. Not much redundancy though if either the Z7ii or 100-400 goes phut.- Solution, take a 2x teleconverter to be used on the 70-200 in an emergency- so it all just about works. Thats the £2700 option.

The £1000 option is a used 80-400 (the second fast focussing kind) which can be had used for £1000.

My question to anyone who has ploughed through all this is, is the 100-400 that much better? would I be buying a lens that I would upgrade before next summer if i plumped for the 80-400?

I know this question spans the knowledge of a couple of forums here, but I have to start somewhere, and Im sure someone must have an 80-400 adapted to their z body. There is surprisingly little about the 80-400 on the youtube, probably because it was considered expensive at the time and in the shadow of the cheaper but heavier 200-500.
