Re: Oly 17mm F1.8 DOF scale

I was trying to recreate the ease of focussing I experienced in film days using the lens scales. However, it seems we are far more critical with digital, or at least I am.

I think Olympus has chosen the 20/20 definition for DOF, because it is easier to reach shallow DOF then ;-).

This is approximately equivalent to 4000 Dots over the image diagonal and to 0.005mm CoC.

The classic definition that I know is 1200 dots over the diagonal and this defines acceptable sharpness limits e.g. for a smooth portrait and is still valid forever. It is not obsolete.

This is appprox. equivalent to 1200 dots over the diagonal and 0.015 CoC.
This is what the Photopills calculator normally calculates.

If you want to use this classic definition simply multiply the values on the lenses DOF scale by 3.
