Rufous Hummingbirds
18

A couple of weeks ago, I spent a few days in east-central Arizona in the White Mountains intending to do some wildlife photography. I saw a lot of elk, some pronghorn, a few deer but didn't come home with any keepers. That was OK as I was also getting to know the area. It's beautiful...pine forests and aspen groves surround wide-ranging meadows. Lakes, creeks, and rivers abound.

An unexpected find ended up occupying much of my time in the area. While driving along state highway 260 between Eager and Pinetop, I noticed small birds flitting about patches of wildflowers. I pulled off the road onto a wide gravel shoulder, lowered the front passenger window and used binoculars to confirm that they were rufous hummingbirds and they were harvesting nectar from firecracker penstemons.

I ended up spending a good four hours in that spot over a couple of days just photographing the hummingbirds. It was terribly relaxing and enjoyable. Here, are a few selects from those sessions.
