With the prices cratering, I bought an EOS M6 II on a whim

With the prices of EF-M now collapsing, I thought it would be a good time to revisit the EOS M6 II. I remember being deadset on buying in when it was announced, by a few firmware issues and the lens line-up made me abort. The timing worked out pretty well, as Panasonic has just announced they will no longer produce entry level cameras: only G, GH and S moving forward.

First, a size comparison. With the attached EVF, the EOS M6 II is perversely the largest camera that I have. Having said that, it's not particularly large in general.

Ergonomics are good with everything falling to hand easily. I haven't shot extensively with a Canon camera in some time, but it was really easy to get everything setup the way I wanted.

The EVF itself is average. It's certainly better than the GM5s, but no where near as bright, high res or the same magnification as the EVF-11 for the Sigma fp/fp-L. Then again, the EVF-11 is a 600 Euro accessory...

The mechanical shutter gives a healthy "thunk". It's the loudest mechanical shutter I've heard in recent memory, but I like how it sounds.

As for the image quality itself, the EF-M 18-150 is better than I remember the EF-M kit lenses being. Certainly sharper than the 15-45 I had before with some pleasing rendering and close focusing ability. It's no Olympus 12-100 f/4 Pro, but then again the entire package cost less than that lens so I can't complain.

Look at those nice, round bokeh balls.

Shutter shock is definitely a thing on the OIS lenses on the M6 II (see below). Panasonic had this issue with the GX8 and issued a firmware update to automatically switch over to the electronic shutter at certain shutter speeds.

Focus point is the bottom right flower.

Overall, it's a pretty pleasing camera. It seems to strike the middle ground between my GM5s and the Sigma fp-L. The Sigma, in theory, is two cameras in one, but in crop mode it gets down to about 20 mp and has autofocus that can be best described as "leisurely". The GM5 is far more compact, but it's a really old sensor, EVF and contrast detect autofocus. Could the EOS M6 II be the happy medium? We shall see.
