Gray Hairstreak

Hairstreak butterflies are very tiny with a wingspan not much more than 1" wide.

The Gray Hairstreak (Strymon melinus) has a prominent orange spot and protruding hairs at the tip of the wing.

A very opportunistic pose here showing both antennae and the proboscis - a sucking mouth part for drinking nectar.

The proboscis is the brown appendage which is inserted into the flower of a small-leaved succulent (Portulacaria afra) native to South Africa.

A very satisfying end of the week of photographing out in nature!
