Best way to reach 600mm for cheap

I can't ask a cheap zoom to be as sharp as an expensive prime ar have as little flare wth backlited subjects. I'm rather interested in "decent" level of IQ.

I'm planning to get the Tamron 150-600, and I wondered if any shorter lens with TC can be better.
Shorter and cheaper lens with TC to get to 600mm with the same IQ and AF speed: None.

I wasn't thinking about something at the same price level as Tamron, not necesarrly cheaper.

Thank you again, I think the Tamron 150-600 would be the best for the money I have to spend on this lens.

I am totally satisfied with the Tamron 150-600 g2 zoom. Its sharp, is water resistant with several seals in the lens and the auto focus and vr is great. You can get a tap in for the g2 lenses that enable you to enter af fine tune values for different distances and focal lengths.

Absolutely! I've been shooting with the G1 and the G2 for years .... it's light, sharp and very hand holdable .....

see here:

Is there any chance some of the bird photos on your flickr gallery were taken with Tamron 150-600?

Nearly all of them are taken with the G2 ....... there are a few exceptions ...... those are taken with the Nikkor AF-S 500mm F4D ...... check the groups.

The G2 is sharper with better contrast than the 500mm F4D!

I've tried the Bigma 50-500mm/ Sigma sport etc.

The Tamron is way lighter (1.9 Kgs) ...... and sharper than the previous generation Bigmas and just as sharp as the sport ...... without the awful balance of the latter.

Quality is nice, AF is good enough for BIF so I will get one of those.

Thank you everybody!

If I would buy a new 600mm zoom now, I'd probably go for the Sigma 60-600mm. It's a bit larger and heavier at 2.7 kg, but the IQ is quite spectacular for a "superzoom", and probably a notch above most of the 150-600mm - or at least on par witht the Sigma 150-600 S, according to several reviews.

Plus, the large zoom range gives you great flexibility for more landscape oriented shots.

I think it's harder to do a good 10x zoom lens than to do a good 4x zoom lens.

I don't want it to cover short focals, I would use other lenses for that.

Yes, one would think so... but in this case it seems to be sort of the exception to the trule.

It is heavier and a bit more pricey, though.

I didn't expect that. Will buy the Tamron for now, as you said, new Bigma is more expensive.

The Tamron is certainly the most "balanced" choice of all 600mm zooms, if you consider price, weight, image quality, AF, and weather sealing. Certainly an excellent lens for the money, nor doubt about that.

Wow.

Frankly the best option is to get a D7200 24MP DX camera. A 400mm on this camera will provide the image size that takes a 600mm lens on your 24MP D750 camera. The 80-400mm on a DX D7xxx or a D500 camera is a dynamite combination in every respect.

I too. have this lens have not used in a while, just trying to get a comparison

Perhaps the 400mm 3.5 ED IF AI-S and a modified TC-16A would provide solid IQ with a limited AF. Around $1.200 on eBay plus shipping and duties.

Didn’t try it though, but the 400mm 3.5 was notorious for tolerating TC’s, since the optics are said to be top notch.

However the 200-500mm 5.6E is in that range too, maybe also the Tamron G2 / Sigma Contemporary 150-600mm.

The 200-500mm has too long zoom throw, but one can get used to zoom twisting the body. Tamron and Sigma, may have overall quality or AF issues.
