Wind in the thistles
7

Our local park has a patch of thistles that has been attracting hoverflies (hornet mimics?) recently. The flowers are a comfortable height for macro photography but the rather slender stems move around in the wind. Subject movement can be dealt with by shutter speed selection but the movement out of focus is harder to deal with. I just took a lot of shots and kept the ones that remained in focus.

In contrast to the tall, free-moving thistles, low-growing field bindweed also grows among the grass in the park. The wind has little effect on these flowers, making it easy to retain focus on insects settled on them. The main downside is the ease with which insects can be disturbed by treading on the surrounding grass and shaking the bindweed flowers.
