On R7 the only RF lenses which make sense are RF 70-200 f/2.8, RF 16 and RF 50 and maybe RF 35, the other are too dark or expensive to make sense on a crop body.

Too dark, especially at the long end

I do most of my bird photography at 350 mm f/8 on APS-C (a Canon EF-S 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 IS STM on a 1.4x extender). Sure, f/8 on APS-C struggles at dawn and dusk, but it's fine during the day.

I'd also note that a 400 mm f/8 on Canon APS-C is equivalent to a 640 mm f/13 on FF, so is roughly equivalent to the RF 600 mm f/11 that Canon sells as a wildlife lens for amateurs.

So, I think the 100-400 mm f/5.6-8 on APS-C will be suitable for amateurs.

, and 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1

this one is maybe

500 mm f/7.1 on Canon APS-C is equivalent to 800 mm f/11 on FF. Again, this is a close match to the RF 800 mm f/11 and so should be fine for amateurs.

Alan

I use the old EF400 f:5.6 on the M6II for bird observation when I walk light.

Focus on BIF is not bad at all and you can crop forever. It is still a very good lens but doesn't like extenders on APS-C. With 1.4 it is fine on FF.
