Re: Canon 100-400 I vs. Sigma 150-600 C?

A local camera store (yes they exist) had a copy of the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary and Sport. The Sport is clearly a niche lens - very heavy and would require a tripod for a longer than 15 minute shoot. It is reportedly slightly better than the C in some ways. The C is a little heavier than the 100-400 I that I have, but eminently hand-holdable.

After a couple outings with the 100-400 Mk I with a 1.4x TC (Mk III), I am convinced that the extra reach and the flexibility of having a maximum aperture of 6.3 (yielding normal focus points) is a better choice for me. The extra few mm of reach will help, too. I will probably trade the Canon for the Sigma and keep the 1.4x for occasional use with my 70-200 F4. Perhaps if I had the 100-400 Mk II I might feel different, but my combination is clearly inadequate for what I want.

Many thanks too all the great comments and the debate.

Cheers
