Davinci Resolve Free and 10-bit Files on MacOS

Someone mentioned in the comments on the latest article that the free version of Davinci Resolve supports 10-bit files on MacOS. I tested this, and my conclusion is:

  1. Davinci Resolve free can import 10-bit video files from my Panasonic G9
  2. Davinci Resolve free knows the 10-bit files are 10-bit
  3. However, Davinci Resolve free does not take advantage of the 10-bit file as far as I can tell. I took two identical clips on fully manual and with identical lighting, and tried every single messed-up, extreme color manipulation and curve manipulation I could think of and at the end, the 8-bit and 10-bit files looked very similar. I can't say they were exactly the same, because there were very slight differences but it does not seem that there would be any difference in any normal scene.
  4. Maybe my test scene was not challenging enough to show the true advantage of 10-bit so I might repeat this experiment with a sky shot or something.
