And with regards to lenses, no rules there either. Every venue is different.
This shot was taken with the very conspicuous 100-400 in an Italian neighborhood during a festival:

This shot exemplifies what I detest about street photography. Sorry Craig , if this was my wife or daughter and I saw or knew you took this I’d have kindly asked you to delete. You’d probably have said no and spouted off about a bunch of well I’m in public bs. I personally see no artistic value in a shot of a random woman’s backside.
To quote Ian Malcom , you street photographers “ were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
Your comment exemplifies what I detest about speed readers. If I may suggest, please re-read my post (Italian festival) or read the young lady's t-shirt. Presumably you're not Italian and/or don't understand the Godfather.
And… both of these comments exemplify what I detest about making things personal in the forum. Please keep comments focused strictly on the issues that you perceive and keep it impersonal. Also recognize that “artistic value” is a very personal thing. If you don’t “get it” than consider the fact that your tastes and preferences are likely very different from someone else’s. Frankly, I find most street photography to be curiously uninteresting, but TBH, that’s simply my own perspective and of little value to most anyone else here. I’m sharing it not because it’s in any way relevant to the issue I’m raising here (or that anyone should give a rip about what I like or don’t like), but it’s more about respecting other people’s preferences, even if they might differ from your own.
