Wide area uses the AF-C settings just as Zone dose with the exception that Zone Area Switching is not taken into account.  Because of this one can not control what the camera will latch onto and track when subject and foreground and/or background are close to the subject.  Wide Area Tracking should only be used when the subject is the only thing is the frame such as a bird in blue sky.
