EF 28-70 3.5-4.5 (yes, the really old one) Mki vs Mkii

I always thought, because it's what I read many years ago, that the only significant difference between the November 1987 lens and the June 1988 one was that the AF gearchain was changed from metal to plastic in the new lens. Researching it today, I see a claim that it was only the newer lens which had an aspheric optical element.

The Canon Museum doesn't make any optical differences clear - both lenses are listed as 10 elements in 9 groups. They don't give a commentary for the older lens, whilst their blurb for the newer one does certainly mention the aspheric - amongst other characteristics which are obviously shared with the older lens.

They do tell us that the older lens is 1.7mm shorter in length (at which setting, I wonder?), weighs 30g more (could be due to either metal vs plastic gears and glass vs plastic element/s) and that the newer lens cost a bit over 11% less (43000 Yen for the Mki vs 39200 for the Mkii).

Has anyone tested or used both? It seems odd that the first version was in production such a very short time.
