I have been using 24-105 since its release. Never owned a 24-70 f2.8, as they tend to be much larger and heavier.

Is the new GM a revolutionary product? Should I try it?

I think the mid-range zoom will be used when I am out and about, i.e., day trips. For example, a kit like

  • 20mm f1.8
  • mid-range zoom - 24-105 or 24-70 GM
  • tele zoom (when needed) - either 70-300 (might replace this with 70-200 GM II later) or 100-400 GM

mostly just document trips, environmental portrait, cityscape, landscape, etc. for fun, not for work.

Sony GM 24-70/2.8 MK2 is a big step forward, compared to it's predecessor. Not only it's lighter, but also sharper across the frame, contrastier and has better colour rendition.Try it if you can, just for sheer pleasure.Same with Sony GM 70-200/2.8 MK2.

I used to have both MK1 lenses and now enjoy having two MK2s.It doesn't mean MK1s were crappy.By all means no.They just required some more consciousness and attention about their limitations, mostly around wide open.Plus stronger muscles to carry :)))

The question whether to pick up Sony 24-70/2.8 GM MK2 or stay with Sony G 24-105/4 is the one you should answer for yourself ,I believe.

I got 24-105/4 as well and I use it mostly on day trips, when I need a normal zoom longer than 70mm and do not bother about f4.Usually combined with Sony GM 100-400/4.5-5.6 and Sony G 16-35/4 PZ (previously Sony Zeiss Vario -Tessar 16-35/4 OSS).

Yet if I visit the place with lots of interesting architecture and interiors, knowing it is not likely, that I will return there soon,I would take Sony GM trio : 12-24/2.8+24-70/2.8 MK2+70-200/2.8 MK2.

In short : Sony G 24-105/4 is for convenience with very good results and Sony GM 24-70/2.8 MK2 is like a set of primes for excellent image quality.

All the best while chosing
